New Hope Church GA010
1864-05-25 to 1864-05-26 · GA · Atlanta Campaign [May-September 1864] · frozen result: Confederate · NPS summary (as listed)
After Johnston retreated to Allatoona Pass on May 19-20, Sherman decided that he would most likely pay dearly for attacking Johnston there, so he determined to move around Johnston's left flank and steal a march toward Dallas. Johnston anticipated Sherman's move and met the Union forces at New Hope Church. Sherman mistakenly surmised that Johnston had a token force and ordered Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker's corps to attack. This corps was severely mauled. On the 26th, both sides en-trenched, and skirmishing continued throughout the day. Actions the next day in this area are discussed under Pickett's Mills.
Command responsibility (ledger v2)
US: William T. Sherman
Grade A under rule 3a; echelon army.
Other candidates: Joseph Hooker
Sherman and Hooker are both listed Major General, a tie. Rule 3(a): the description has Sherman ordering Hooker's corps to attack, and Cox has Sherman, hastening to the front at the sound of the firing, directing Hooker to call in his divisions and attack. The first contact was made by Hooker's leading division (Geary's) with Hood's advance guard before Sherman reached the front; Sherman's command authority over the corps was continuous (compare MS009), so he is chosen and Hooker is recorded as the candidate. A reading that counts only the officer on the ground at first contact would give Hooker.

Rule 2, single listing. The description has Johnston anticipating Sherman's move and meeting the Union forces at New Hope Church; Johnston's report covers the army under his command. Johnston says Hood's corps was placed with its centre at New Hope Church and that Stewart's division repulsed Hooker's corps: subordinate context.

supportedunresolved Cox says McCook's cavalry captured a despatch from Johnston to Jackson saying the Confederate army was moving toward Dallas, that appearances convinced Hooker the stronger enemy force lay toward New Hope Church, and that Johnston was still uncertain on the 23rd whether Sherman had crossed the Etowah in full. Johnston says Jackson reported the enemy moving down the Etowah as if to cross near Stilesborough. NPS says Sherman mistakenly surmised a token force.

0d4bd38e65b1…disputedpost_outcome The frozen casualty text reads Total unknown (US 1,600; CS unknown); the live field reads 1015 (US 665; CS 350). Johnston puts his own loss in each of the May 25 and 27 actions at about 450 killed and wounded, estimates the Union loss on the 27th at 3,000 at least, and says it was probably greater on the 25th. Cox gives only a May total for the whole army (context).
Original casualty returns were not inspected; preserve totals, categories, cutoffs and differences. No canonical reconciliation or casualty-based opening count; related actions must not be added without resolving population overlap. Johnston's 3,000 is an estimate derived from a count of dead on the 27th; it is not a New Hope Church return. Cox's monthly total is not assigned here.

supportedunresolved Cox says Hooker's columns assaulted Hood's position again and again, and that at the Etowah crossing on the 23rd Hooker took Schofield's pontoons and Schofield lost the afternoon waiting, which Cox calls characteristic of Hooker. Johnston says Stewart's division repulsed Hooker's corps after two hours. The frozen commanders are General Joseph E. Johnston, Major General William T. Sherman and Major General Joseph Hooker; the live page gives General William Sherman and Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Johnston.
Attributed judgments from an interested history (Cox's own corps was delayed by Hooker) and report; the frozen commanders do not receive automatic sole credit, and the live ranks are not adopted.

No inspected return establishes matched personnel at a common opening boundary. The frozen side-specific numerical strength bounds are blank (missing_numeric_strength). No figure in this pass is adopted as a simultaneous opening force.
supportedunresolved The frozen force fields name the two armies without counts; the live field reads zero. Cox says Geary's division first fought a Confederate advance guard of two Alabama regiments and Austin's Sharpshooters that made Geary think he faced a larger force, and that after Williams and Butterfield came up about five o'clock Hooker's three divisions assaulted in columns of brigades. Johnston says Stewart's division was attacked by Hooker's corps and that more Confederate infantry and artillery were engaged on the 25th than on the 27th. Cox's Appendix A says Quarles's brigade joined near New Hope Church with 2,200 effectives, to which Cox adds 200 for officers.
Formations and one brigade figure; no matched count of troops engaged is inspected and none is adopted. The live zero is not measured absence.

d7ae08f7388f…terrain
disputedunresolved Cox describes a wooded valley in front of New Hope Church with open fields to the north, a Confederate line on wooded ridges with open valleys before it, an assault through dense wood, and a thunderstorm during the fight. Johnston says his troops were not entrenched in either the New Hope Church or the May 27 action. Cox disputes this, saying Johnston's statement rests on his subordinates' reports and that Hooker's division commanders drove the Confederate advance within entrenched lines.
Ground from an interested history and report, with a direct dispute over entrenchment; no map verification. The Confederate position was taken on the 25th and is not tagged inherited. For May 27, Cleburne's May 30 report (GA012 wooded-ravine-and-angle; not a GA010 family) says his division's entrenchments were thrown up on the 26th and the morning of the 27th, contrary to Johnston's statement.
