Ezra Church GA018

1864-07-28 to 1864-07-28 · GA · Atlanta Campaign [May-September 1864] · frozen result: Union · NPS summary (as listed)

CWSAC description
Earlier, Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman's forces had approached Atlanta from the east and north. Hood had not defeated them, but he had kept them away from the city. Sherman now decided to attack from the west. He ordered the Army of the Tennessee, commanded by Maj. Gen. O.O. Howard, to move from the left wing to the right and cut Hood's last railroad supply line between East Point and Atlanta. Hood foresaw such a maneuver and determined to send the two corps of Lt. Gen. Stephen D. Lee and Lt. Gen. Alexander P. Stewart to intercept and destroy the Union force. Thus, on the afternoon of July 28, the Rebels assaulted Howard at Ezra Church. Howard had anticipated such a thrust, entrenched one of his corps in the Confederates' path, and repulsed the determined attack, inflicting numerous casualties. Howard, however, failed to cut the railroad.

Command responsibility (ledger v2)

US: Oliver O. Howard

Grade A under rule 2; echelon army. superior_directing

Rule 2, single listing. The description has the Army of the Tennessee commanded by Howard, who entrenched one of his corps and repulsed the attack; Logan says he returned to his corps on the morning of the 28th on Howard's appointment. Logan's XV Corps received the attack: subordinate context. The description has Sherman deciding the move and ordering the Army of the Tennessee to the right, and Cox says Sherman himself was with Logan's corps with Howard when the attack came (superior_directing: Sherman).

Confederate: John Bell Hood

Grade A under rule 2; echelon army.

Rule 2, single listing. The description and Cox have Hood deciding the attack and sending S. D. Lee's corps, supported by Loring's and Walthall's divisions of Stewart's corps; no single field commander of both is named (Logan's prisoners said Hardee's and Lee's corps). Cox says Hood ordered Hardee to go to the front and assume command of both corps engaged, but the battle was over before Hardee could reach the field, so no command change took effect and none is labelled.

information

supportedunresolved Cox says Davis's flanking division took a wrong road for lack of accurate maps and never reached the field, and that prisoners uniformly described the July 20, 22 and 28 attacks as useless in their army's view. Logan says the assault fell suddenly. NPS says Howard had anticipated the thrust.

Attributed knowledge and prisoner testimony from interested accounts and a summary; the prisoner statements are not a morale measure.

logistics

supportedunresolved Cox says the railway reached Thomas's camps by July 25 over a Chattahoochee bridge built in six days, and that the Army of the Tennessee sent its trains and hospitals toward Peachtree Creek before moving.

Movement and supply statements from an interested history; no supply return inspected.

objectives

supportedunresolved Cox says Lee was ordered to attack Howard and drive him from the Lickskillet road and the road by Ezra Church, and judges it wise to strike Howard's right while it was moving and before it could entrench. NPS says Sherman sent Howard to cut the last railroad between East Point and Atlanta.

Stated plans from an interested history and a summary; not a causal estimate.

outcome

supportedpost_outcome The frozen and live results read Union victory. Logan says every assault was repelled; Cox says the enemy acknowledged himself beaten before sunset. NPS says Howard repulsed the attack but failed to cut the railroad.

Retain the original result and engagement interval; later movements and campaign contribution are different measures. No new probabilities or individual causal credit.

disputedpost_outcome The frozen casualty text reads 3,562 (US 562; CS 3,000); the live field reads 5342 (US 700; CS 4642). Logan's July 29 and campaign reports both give 'my losses' as 50 killed, 439 wounded and 73 missing, aggregate 562; the first says 565 Confederates buried and about 200 unburied, the second over 600 buried; both judge the enemy loss at not less than 6,000 or 7,000. Cox says Howard reported under six hundred lost, fewer than the almost seven hundred Confederate dead buried by Logan, and that Howard estimated the enemy loss at five thousand.

Original casualty returns were not inspected; preserve totals, categories, cutoffs and differences. No canonical reconciliation or casualty-based opening count; related actions must not be added without resolving population overlap. The frozen US 562 equals Logan's aggregate for 'my losses'; the inspected passages do not say whether it includes the regiments lent by Blair and Dodge, and it does not cover the rest of the Army of the Tennessee. Whether the frozen figure derives from it is not established. The Confederate figures are estimates.

responsibility

supportedunresolved Cox says Stewart, Loring, Brown and Johnson were all wounded leading attacks, that some Confederate units finally refused to advance, and that Sherman and Howard were with Logan's corps. Logan credits his three division commanders equally and thanks Blair and Dodge. The frozen commanders are General John Bell Hood and Major General Oliver O. Howard; the live page gives Major General Oliver Howard and General John Hood.

Attributed judgments from interested accounts; Logan and Lee are not listed commanders; the frozen commanders do not receive automatic sole credit, and the live ranks are not adopted.

strength

unknownunresolved

No inspected return establishes matched personnel at a common opening boundary. The frozen side-specific numerical strength bounds are blank (missing_numeric_strength). No figure in this pass is adopted as a simultaneous opening force.

disputedunresolved The frozen force fields name the Army of the Tennessee against two corps of the Army of Tennessee without counts; the live field reads zero. Cox says Lee's corps attacked, supported by Loring's and Walthall's divisions of Stewart's corps, and that Howard massed his artillery on the flank. Logan says prisoners reported the assault made by Hardee's and Lee's corps entire (his July 29 report says Hardee's and Lee's corps), that the enemy exceeded him in numbers, that he received about 1,000 men from Blair and Dodge, and that the enemy used one battery and he none.

Conflicting identifications of the attacking corps and of the artillery used; no count of troops engaged is inspected and none is adopted. The live zero is not measured absence.

terrain

disputedunresolved Logan says his line held the crest of a continuous ridge with a good field of fire. His July 29 report says the lines were protected only by hastily thrown logs and rails, while his campaign report says the troops had not had a moment to build even the rudest defences. Cox says Logan's men had made some cover, that the ground was high with a partly open slope, and that the Fifteenth Corps line bent back at nearly a right angle.

Ground described by interested accounts, with an intra-source difference over cover; no map verification. The position was taken during the march and is not tagged inherited.
