Yellow Bayou LA023
1864-05-18 to 1864-05-18 · LA · Red River Campaign [March-April 1864] · frozen result: Union · NPS summary (as listed)
Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks during his retreat in the Red River Campaign, following the battles of Mansfield and Pleasant Hill, reached the Atchafalaya River on May 17. Once on the other side of the river he would be shielded from the continuous Confederate harassment. But, he had to wait to cross the river until the army engineers constructed a bridge. On the 18th, Banks learned that Maj. Gen. Richard Taylor's force was near Yellow Bayou so he ordered Brig. Gen. A.J. Smith to stop them. Since Smith could not comply himself, he ordered Brig. Gen. Joseph A. Mower to meet Taylor. The Yankees attacked and drove the Rebels to their main line. The Confederates counterattacked, forcing the Federals to give ground. The Union force finally repulsed the Confederates. This see-saw action continued for several hours until the ground cover caught fire forcing both sides to retire. Yellow Bayou was the last battle of Banks's ill-fated Red River Expedition, and it insured that the Federals would escape as an army to fight again.

US: Joseph A. Mower
Grade A under rule 2; echelon corps_or_wing. superior_directing
Irwin says A. J. Smith was at the Simmesport landing and that Mower, 'who com- manded in Smith's absence', advanced his lines when his skirmishers came in; the command was A. J. Smith's detachment of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Corps (rule 2). The description has Banks ordering A. J. Smith to stop Taylor and Smith ordering Mower to meet him (superior_directing: A. J. Smith).

information
supportedunresolved NPS says Banks learned on the 18th that Taylor was near Yellow Bayou and ordered A. J. Smith to stop him. Irwin says Mower, commanding in Smith's absence, advanced as soon as his skirmishers came in. Taylor identified his opponents as fresh troops from Texas, which differs from the Sixteenth Corps named by Irwin and the frozen record.
Attributed knowledge from a summary, a history and an interested dispatch; Taylor's identification is preserved, not adopted.

Taylor says Confederate cavalry had attacked the wagon train near Yellow Bayou on the 17th, and on the 19th that the limits of human and equine endurance had been reached.

supportedunresolved Irwin says A. J. Smith's command was posted to cover the crossing of the Atchafalaya, and NPS that the far bank would shield Banks from Confederate harassment. Taylor wrote on the 18th that he would continue operations as long as the enemy was within reach and that the campaign would probably close that day at Simsport.
Stated aims from a history, a summary and an interested dispatch.

89265de11378…outcome
disputedpost_outcome The frozen result reads Union strategic victory and the live result Union Victory (strategic). Taylor says his men held the field, the enemy falling back at once and leaving 30 dead; Irwin says Mower drove the Confederates off the field in confusion; NPS says the see-saw action ended when the ground cover caught fire and both sides retired.
Retain the original result and engagement interval; later movements and campaign contribution are different measures. No new probabilities or individual causal credit. The frozen 'strategic' qualifier and NPS's escape statement are campaign context.

5846467a93ab…disputedpost_outcome The frozen casualty text reads 860 total (US 360; CS 500), and the live field agrees. Irwin gives Mower's loss as 38 killed, 226 wounded and 3 missing, 267 in all; Taylor's loss as about 500 by his own report; and 452 killed and wounded by the Confederate returns. Taylor's dispatch puts his loss at 500, with 30 killed, 50 severely wounded and some hundred prisoners.

No inspected return establishes matched personnel at a common opening boundary. The frozen side-specific numerical strength bounds are blank (missing_numeric_strength). No figure in this pass is adopted as a simultaneous opening force.
disputedunresolved The frozen force field reads 1st and 3rd Divisions, XVI Army Corps [US] and District of Western Louisiana [CS]; the live field reads zero. Irwin says A. J. Smith's command held the position near Yellow Bayou when Taylor attacked with his whole force; Taylor's May 19 dispatch says he fought fresh troops recently arrived from Texas. On May 10 Taylor put his own force at scarce 6,000.
The Union force is identified differently by Irwin and Taylor; the only numerical figure is Taylor's own from eight days earlier. None is adopted as a matched opening strength. The live zero is not measured absence.

89265de11378…terrain
supportedunresolved Taylor says his left near the De Glaize was severely repulsed, and his May 18 dispatch says the wagons cut out near Yellow Bayou on the 17th could not be brought off because the only exit was the De Glaize road, held by the Sixteenth Corps, and that Union stragglers were left scattered through the De Glaize swamps; Irwin says the Atchafalaya was swollen to six or seven hundred yards by backwater; NPS says the fighting ended when the ground cover caught fire.
Ground described by interested dispatches, a history and a summary; no map verification. The May 17 train raid is context; the passage describes ground, not a Union entrapment on May 18.

- NPS/CWSAC is one family. Richard B.
