Parker's Cross Roads TN011
1862-12-31 to 1862-12-31 · TN · Forrest's Expedition into West Tennessee [December 1862-January 1863] · frozen result: Confederate · NPS summary (as listed)
As Brig. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest's expedition into West Tennessee neared its conclusion, Union Brig. Gen. Jeremiah C. Sullivan, with the brigades of Col. Cyrus L. Dunham and Col. John W. Fuller, attempted to cut Forrest off from withdrawing across the Tennessee River. Dunham's and Forrest's march routes, on December 31, 1862, brought them into contact at Parker's Cross Roads. Skirmishing began about 9:00 am, with Forrest taking an initial position along a wooded ridge northwest of Dunham at the intersection. Confederate artillery gained an early advantage. Dunham pulled his brigade back a half mile and redeployed, facing north. His Federals repelled frontal feints until attacked on both flanks and rear by Forrest's mounted and dismounted troops. During a lull, Forrest sent Dunham a demand for an unconditional surrender. Dunham refused and was preparing for Forrest's next onset when Fuller's Union brigade arrived from the north and surprised the Confederates with an attack on their rear; Confederate security detachments had failed to warn of Fuller's approach. "Charge 'em both ways," ordered Forrest. The Confederates briefly reversed front, repelled Fuller, then rushed past Dunham's demoralized force and withdrew south to Lexington and then across the Tennessee River. Both sides claimed victory, but the Confederate claims appear to have more credence.
Command responsibility (ledger v2)
US: Cyrus L. Dunham
Grade C under rule 2; echelon brigade. responsibility_unresolvedsuperior_directing
Other candidates: Jeremiah C. Sullivan
Jordan and Pryor, citing Dunham's report, call Dunham 'the Federal commander' (their OCR reads 'C« T. Dunham'; identity rests on the description's 'Col. Cyrus L. Dunham', the KY008 US listing string). The description has Dunham's brigade make first contact and refuse Forrest's demand before Fuller arrived. Sullivan directed the operation (rule 2, third bullet; superior_directing: Sullivan). Jordan and Pryor is a Forrest-endorsed history; an OCR-interleaved footnote suggests Sullivan arrived later, but no inspected passage says he took command.

information
supportedunresolved NPS says Confederate security detachments failed to warn of Fuller's approach; Jordan and Pryor say Colonel Carroll informed Forrest that a fresh and superior force had reached the field, and that Forrest was within eighty yards of its line before he could discover it. They also say Dunham's report states he had learned at Clarksburg that the Confederate force was 8,000 strong with 12 guns.
Retrospective accounts of what each side knew. Dunham's statement is paraphrased inside the book (report not inspected) and concerns information he had at Clarksburg before the battle, not his knowledge during it.

disputedpost_outcome The frozen result is Confederate victory, as is the live field. NPS says both sides claimed victory, the Confederate claims appearing more credible, and that the Confederates withdrew across the Tennessee; Jordan and Pryor say Forrest withdrew to Lexington that evening.
Retain the original result and engagement interval; later movements and campaign contribution are different measures. No new probabilities or individual causal credit. Both sides claimed victory; the frozen label is retained.

3f583c0aa133…disputedpost_outcome The frozen casualty text and live field agree: 737 total (US 237; CS 500). Jordan and Pryor give Confederate losses of some twenty-five killed, not over seventy-five wounded and about 250 captured, and Federal losses of at least fifty killed, 150 wounded and about 100 prisoners.
Original casualty returns were not inspected; preserve totals, categories, cutoffs and differences. No canonical reconciliation or casualty-based opening count; related actions must not be added without resolving population overlap. The commander-endorsed figures differ from the frozen split and are not adopted.

3f583c0aa133…responsibility
supportedunresolved Jordan and Pryor say Napier charged without Forrest's orders and was mortally wounded, and that Forrest answered a Federal surrender demand by claiming he had already surrendered before galloping off; NPS says Dunham refused Forrest's demand for unconditional surrender. The live heading ranks Forrest Major General against the frozen Brigadier General.
Subordinate and army command roles from a commander-endorsed history and a summary; no listed commander receives automatic sole credit. The heading rank is not adopted.

No inspected return establishes matched personnel at a common opening boundary. Imported numerical estimates remain unchanged; this pass does not validate them as simultaneous opening forces.
disputedunresolved The frozen force text gives two Union brigades of approx. 3,000 (structured US bounds 3,000/3,000) and a Confederate expeditionary brigade; the live field reads 3000 total (US 3000; CS 0;). Jordan and Pryor say the Confederates present did not exceed 1,200 with six guns and at no moment in the day exceeded twelve hundred, against a Federal brigade, battery and cavalry detachment of not less than 1,800. They total regimental figures attributed to Dunham's official report as 1,554, and say a Chicago Tribune correspondent's figures for two regiments (604 and 600) would make the brigade 1,824. They describe the later Federal arrival as two fresh brigades; NPS names Fuller's brigade.
Brigade, army and reported figures differ in scope and timing. The 1,554 and 1,824 totals are the book's arithmetic from figures it attributes to Dunham's report (not inspected) and a newspaper; substituting 604 and 600 into the OCR components gives 1,704, so the printed 1,824 does not reproduce (OCR not checked against print). The book's two arriving brigades differ from NPS's Fuller brigade. None is adopted as matched opening strength.

- Dunham's, Fuller's, Sullivan's and Forrest's reports, returns and casualty reconciliation remain deferred.
- NPS/CWSAC is one family; Jordan and Pryor is one retrospective Confederate history written from Forrest's papers and notes, for most of whose statements Forrest's prefatory note accepts responsibility. It is not independent of the listed Confederate commander. Reports and newspapers quoted inside it are not additional families.
- No automatic commander attribution, causal campaign score, morale/readiness number or battle/campaign double counting.
