supportedunresolved Eagle says he heard blows at 5:30 p.m. on the 19th as timber platforms were being secured inside the embrasures and ordered a shot fired over them. Gwynn says the Monticello apparently did not suspect the operations going forward and that he could not discover what damage the enemy sustained.
Each commander's account of what he observed; no signal or message record inspected.

ce706fafd174…objectives
supportedunresolved NPS says the gunboats dueled with the batteries in an attempt to enforce the blockade of Hampton Roads. Gwynn says he hurried the guns to Sewell's Point to expedite the works and afterwards ordered more troops forward to defend the post against further assaults. Eagle says he was satisfied he could have silenced the battery.
Stated aims from a summary and the two reports.

disputedpost_outcome The frozen result reads Inconclusive and the live result Indecisive; NPS says the two sides did each other little harm. Gwynn says the Monticello was driven off after an hour and a half and that her retreat showed the fire had become too warm; Eagle says the action lasted one hour and fifteen minutes and that he withdrew only for want of ammunition.
Retain the original result and engagement interval; later movements and campaign contribution are different measures. No new probabilities or individual causal credit.

ce706fafd174…responsibility
supportedunresolved The frozen commanders are Brigadier General Walter Gwynn and Captain Peyton Colquitt for the Confederates and Lieutenant D.L. Braine (navy) for the Union; the live page lists Braine and Gwynn. Gwynn says he gave Colquitt command of all forces and guns at the post and returned to Norfolk before the May 19 fire. Eagle signs as commanding the Star [Monticello] and says Braine had charge of the pivot gun.
Roles from the two reports: the listed Union commander appears as the pivot-gun officer under Eagle. No listed commander receives automatic sole credit.

unknownunresolved
No inspected return establishes matched personnel at a common opening boundary. The frozen side-specific numerical strength bounds are blank (missing_numeric_strength). No figure in this pass is adopted as a simultaneous opening force.
disputedunresolved The frozen force field reads 'Two gunboats [US]; battery garrison [CS]'; the live field reads zero. Gwynn says the Monticello carried three guns, one a heavy 10-inch Dahlgren, joined on the 18th by a steam tug with one gun, and that by 5 p.m. on the 19th three 32-pounders and two small rifled guns were in the battery with detachments of infantry and artillery. Eagle says the battery was masked with thirteen embrasures and that the Confederates had three rifled cannon.
Vessel and gun counts, not personnel; the two reports differ on the battery's guns. None is adopted as a matched opening strength. The live zero is not measured absence.

ce706fafd174…Open questions
- Colquitt's May 19 report, Stringham's May 19 report, Braine's May 22 statement on the Thomas Freeborn and Dahlgren's May 30 report on shell fragments were read but not selected; the May 18 exchange is recorded only in Gwynn's account among the selected sources.
- Braine's May 22 statement (Navy Volume 5, p.645, read but not selected) says that after the Monticello had fired a number of times the Thomas Freeborn came along, Commander Ward (a listed Aquia Creek commander) came on board, and the Freeborn fired some twelve or fourteen shots at the unfinished battery above Sewell's Point. The statement gives no date for this firing, and Gwynn's 'steam-tug' from Old Point is not identified with the Freeborn.
- NPS/CWSAC is one family. Gwynn's May 20, 1861 telegram and report (Army Official Records Series I, Volume II) are one family of interested Confederate accounts. Eagle's May 19 report (Navy Official Records Series I, Volume 5) is one family of interested Union accounts. The Army and Navy Official Records volumes are shared containers, not additional witnesses, and reprints of a report in the other compilation are copies. Report dates are not event times or proof of contemporary knowledge. No Scribner history narrates this engagement; Nicolay's The Outbreak of Rebellion mentions Great Bethel only in passing.
- No automatic commander attribution, causal campaign score, morale/readiness number or battle/campaign double counting.
