Big Bethel VA003
1861-06-10 to 1861-06-10 · VA · Blockade of the Chesapeake Bay [May-June 1861] · frozen result: Confederate · NPS summary (as listed)
This was the first land battle in Virginia. Maj. Gen. Benjamin F. Butler sent converging columns from Hampton and Newport News against advanced Confederate outposts at Little and Big Bethel. Confederates abandoned Little Bethel and fell back to their entrenchments behind Brick Kiln Creek, near Big Bethel Church. The Federals, under immediate command of Brig. Gen. Ebenezer Pierce, pursued, attacked frontally along the road, and were repulsed. Crossing downstream, the 5th New York Zouaves attempted to turn the Confederate left flank, but were repulsed. Unit commander Col. T. Wynthrop was killed. The Union forces were disorganized and retired, returning to Hampton and Newport News. The Confederates suffered 1 killed, 7 wounded.
Command responsibility (ledger v2)
US: Ebenezer Pierce
Grade A under rule 2; echelon unknown. superior_directing
Rule 2, single listing. The description puts the Federals under Pierce's immediate command; Pierce's report has him with the column from the night march, deciding to follow his written instructions, directing the attack ('I directed Colonel Townsend, with his regiment, to advance') and the retreat ('Shortly after I directed all the forces to retire'); 'I rode back, ordered them to cease firing' concerns the night friendly-fire at New Market Bridge. Butler planned the operation and issued the plan at his headquarters (superior_directing: Butler; the description's 'Maj. Gen. Benjamin F. Butler' is taken as the NC001 listing 'Benjamin Butler').

Grade A under rule 3a; echelon division.
Other candidates: D. H. Hill
Rule 3(a); both listings are colonels, so without a stating passage rule 3(c) would apply. Magruder's dispatch from Headquarters Bethel Church, signed 'Colonel, Commanding Hampton Division', reports the attack at 10 o'clock and the rout; his report praises Hill's 'judicious and determined action' at the head of the North Carolina regiment, which is a subordinate leading part of the force. No inspected passage names another overall commander.

supportedunresolved Pierce says a body of armed men that fired on the head of his column, and on which Townsend's regiment fired, proved to be friends, part of Bendix's force from Newport News, that Duryea and Washburn advised against going on because surprise was lost, and that local testimony put 4,000 men at Big Bethel. Magruder reports the prisoners' figure of 5,000 and reports of large forces on both his flanks.
Contemporary reports as relayed by the two commanders; no signal or intelligence record inspected.

supportedunresolved NPS says Butler sent converging columns against the advanced outposts at Little and Big Bethel; the plan Pierce reprints was to capture the Little Bethel men, push on to Big Bethel and burn both. Magruder withdrew to Yorktown after the action because he thought it imprudent to leave Yorktown exposed.

a93b5f5068be…outcome
supportedpost_outcome The frozen and live results read Confederate victory. Magruder says the enemy was repulsed at all points and totally routed after two hours and a half; Pierce says it became apparent the battery had been strongly reinforced and any effort to take it useless, and he directed a retreat, placing Allen's First New York Regiment in the lane and Carr's Second Regiment in line over the ground the Fifth had held; NPS says the Union forces were disorganized and retired.
Retain the original result and engagement interval; later movements and campaign contribution are different measures. No new probabilities or individual causal credit.

36a92480c0f7…disputedpost_outcome The frozen casualty text reads 87 (US 79; CS 8); the live field reads 84 (US 76; CS 8), and NPS gives Confederate losses of 1 killed and 7 wounded. Magruder reports his own loss as one killed and seven wounded; for the enemy, ten dead found and perhaps fifty wounded on June 10, then eighteen dead found, an estimate of 25-30 killed and 150 wounded, and an enemy acknowledgment of 175 killed and wounded. Pierce reports 21 casualties from the night firing between Union columns and refers to his former report for the rest.
Original casualty returns were not inspected; preserve totals, categories, cutoffs and differences. No canonical reconciliation or casualty-based opening count; related actions must not be added without resolving population overlap. The night-firing casualties belong to the approach march; they overlap any Union total and must not be added to it.

supportedunresolved The frozen commanders are Colonel John B. Magruder and Colonel D.H. Hill for the Confederates and Brigadier General Ebenezer Pierce for the Union; the live page gives Magruder as Major General, and he signs as colonel commanding the Hampton Division. NPS says the Federals were under Pierce's immediate command. Pierce says he decided to follow his written instructions against his colonels' advice and later directed all forces to retire; Magruder praises Hill's 'judicious and determined action'.

No inspected return establishes matched personnel at a common opening boundary. Imported numerical estimates remain unchanged; this pass does not validate them as simultaneous opening forces.
disputedunresolved The frozen and live force fields read 4,700 (US 3,500; CS 1,200). Magruder reports about 3,500 attackers (prisoners said 5,000) and his own force about 1,200 engaged and 1,400 in all, 'about one thousand two hundred men' all told. Pierce says Duryea crossed with some 850 men and Townsend followed with 650, and that a woman at a farm-house said Big Bethel was garrisoned by some 4,000.
Point figures from the Confederate commander's dispatches and partial regimental figures from Pierce; the frozen figures resemble Magruder's but their basis is not established. None is adopted as a matched opening strength.

supportedunresolved NPS says the Confederates fell back to entrenchments behind Brick Kiln Creek near Big Bethel Church. Pierce found the enemy in a strong position in battery at the head of the road, and the Newport News troops were prevented from charging by a creek. Ground from a summary and the two reports; no map inspected. NPS calls them entrenchments to which the Confederates fell back; the inspected passages do not date their construction.
