Haw's Shop VA058
1864-05-28 to 1864-05-28 · VA · Grant's Overland Campaign [May-June 1864] · frozen result: Inconclusive · NPS summary (as listed)
Gregg's cavalry division, supported by Torbert's division, advanced to cover the Army of the Potomac's crossing of the Pamunkey River and movement toward Totopotomoy Creek. Fitzhugh Lee's and Hampton's cavalry divisions, later reinforced by Butler's South Carolina brigade, met the Federals at Enon Church. After seven hours of mostly dismounted cavalry fighting, the Federal advance was stopped. Both Confederate and Union infantry began arriving in the vicinity as the cavalry fighting raged.

supportedunresolved Humphreys says Sheridan reported at 6 p.m. that prisoners placed Longstreet's and Ewell's corps four miles from Hawes's Shop, and that his own identification of the Confederate force comes later from Fitzhugh Lee.
Attributed reports; Fitzhugh Lee's information is postwar and not inspected directly.

objectives
supportedunresolved Humphreys says Sheridan was directed to demonstrate toward Richmond to learn where the enemy was posted; Sheridan's report says the aim was to find out the enemy's whereabouts. NPS says Gregg advanced to cover the army's crossing and movement toward the Totopotomoy.

disputedpost_outcome The frozen result reads Inconclusive and the live result Indecisive. NPS says the Federal advance was stopped after seven hours. Humphreys says Custer and Gregg carried the intrenchments and drove the enemy back; Sheridan's report calls it a hard-contested engagement, and a garbled line of it appears to say the enemy was driven back, leaving his dead.
Retain the original result and engagement interval; later movements and campaign contribution are different measures. No new probabilities or individual causal credit. NPS and the Union accounts describe the end of the fight differently.

supportedunresolved Humphreys says Custer's brigade and Gregg's division carried the intrenchments late in the day, with Fitzhugh Lee on the Confederate right and Hampton on the left, and, citing Sheridan, that Torbert's other brigades were not seriously engaged. The frozen commanders are Brigadier General Gregg and Major Generals Fitzhugh Lee and Hampton; the live page lists Gregg and Fitzhugh Lee.
Roles as stated; no listed commander receives automatic sole credit.

No inspected return establishes matched personnel at a common opening boundary. The frozen side-specific numerical strength bounds are blank (missing_numeric_strength). No figure in this pass is adopted as a simultaneous opening force.
disputedunresolved The frozen force field reads Divisions and the live field zero. NPS names Gregg's division supported by Torbert's against Fitzhugh Lee's and Hampton's divisions, later reinforced by Butler's brigade. Sheridan's report says the force appeared to be the enemy's cavalry corps and a South Carolina brigade; Humphreys relays Sheridan that the brigade was reported 4,000 strong, but cites Fitzhugh Lee for two divisions of two brigades each and Butler's brigade.
The identifications differ; the 4,000 is a report relayed by Sheridan, not a return. None is adopted as a matched opening strength; live zeros are not measured absence.

- Gregg's, Torbert's, Custer's, Hampton's and Fitzhugh Lee's reports and the returns remain deferred; Sheridan's May 28 dispatches were not located in the selected range.
- NPS/CWSAC (the live NPS page and the frozen Arnold rows) is one family. Humphreys' The Virginia Campaign of ’64 and ’65 (1883) is an interested history by the Army of the Potomac's chief of staff, in the same author family as the registered From Gettysburg to the Rapidan, and it shares headquarters papers with Meade's and Sheridan's reports. Meade's, Sheridan's, Hampton's, Butler's and Wild's reports, printed in Official Records Series I, Volume XXXVI, Parts 1 and 2, are separate families of interested commanders' accounts; the volume is a shared container, not an additional witness. Report dates are not event times or proof of contemporary knowledge.
