Dinwiddie Court House VA086
1865-03-31 to 1865-03-31 · VA · Appomattox Campaign [March-April 1865] · frozen result: Confederate · NPS summary (as listed)
On March 29, with the Cavalry Corps and the II and V Corps, Sheridan undertook a flank march to turn Gen. Robert E. Lee's Petersburg defenses. A steady downpour turned the roads to mud, slowing the advance. On March 31, Maj. Gen. W.H. Fitzhugh Lee's cavalry and Pickett's infantry division met the Union vanguard north and northwest of Dinwiddie Court House and drove it back, temporarily stalling Sheridan's movement. With Union infantry approaching from the east, Pickett withdrew before daybreak to entrench at the vital road junction at Five Forks. Lee ordered Pickett to hold this intersection at all hazard.
Command responsibility (ledger v2)
US: Philip Sheridan
Grade A under rule 2; echelon corps_or_wing. superior_directing
Rule 2. Sheridan commanded the flanking column and ordered the counterattack; Devin, Crook and Custer led parts of it. Grant intended to reinforce Sheridan to turn Lee's right (superior_directing: Grant).

Other candidates: Fitzhugh Lee
Pickett and Fitzhugh Lee, both Major General. Humphreys has Pickett assume command of the next morning's operation on arriving at Five Forks; the first contact on the 31st was Fitz Lee's cavalry meeting Devin before Pickett's infantry moved, within that operation (rule 3(a)). Fitz Lee had taken command of the Cavalry Corps by the commanding general's order (subordinate). The description's 'W.H. Fitzhugh Lee' does not settle which Lee the listing means; the choice does not depend on it. Lee planned to attack the Fifth Corps' flank in connection with Pickett's attack (superior_directing: Lee).

499b0b4641ad…outcome
supportedpost_outcome The frozen and live results read Confederate victory; NPS says the Confederates drove the Union vanguard back, temporarily stalling Sheridan, and that Pickett withdrew before daybreak to Five Forks. Fitzhugh Lee says they drove the Union cavalry to within half a mile of the Court House and began moving back to Five Forks at daylight; Humphreys says the Gibbs-Gregg attack forced Pickett to face about and meet Sheridan's line in front of the Court House in a contest that lasted until night.
Retain the original result and engagement interval; later movements and campaign contribution are different measures. No new probabilities or individual causal credit. Pickett's withdrawal on the morning of April 1 belongs to the interval before VA088.

931d6345945d…responsibility
supportedunresolved Humphreys says Pickett assumed command of the operation against Sheridan and that Sheridan, when Pickett exposed his rear in following Devin and Davies, ordered Gibbs and Gregg to attack him and brought up two of Custer's brigades; he judges that Warren should have moved with Griffin and Crawford soon after 10.50 p.m. Fitzhugh Lee says he took command of the Cavalry Corps by the commanding general's order. The frozen commanders are Pickett and Fitzhugh Lee (CS) and Sheridan (US); the live page lists Sheridan and Pickett. The NPS description has 'Maj. Gen. W.H. Fitzhugh Lee's cavalry' and Pickett's infantry drive back the Union vanguard; Humphreys names the cavalry divisions of the two Lees.
Direction and criticism attributed as stated. Warren's night movement bears on VA088 as well; it is not scored here. The NPS name form does not distinguish the two Lees and is not used for attribution. No listed commander receives automatic sole credit.

disputedunresolved The frozen force text reads 65,277 (US 45,247; CS 20,030) and the live field zero. Humphreys gives, from the February 20 return, 5,760 enlisted men in the two Lees' cavalry divisions (including Roberts's brigade) and about 3,600 of Pickett's and 3,000 of Johnson's infantry (6,600) for the five brigades at Five Forks, and the present for duty of Sheridan's enlisted cavalry as 13,000; Fitzhugh Lee says Pickett came up with five small brigades of infantry.
The frozen figures state no date or population. Humphreys' Confederate figures are February 20 return strengths assigned to the formations present, not counts on March 31; the Union cavalry figure is a campaign-opening present-for-duty total. None is adopted as a matched opening strength; live zeros are not measured absence.

The woods and the stream predate the engagement; the crossing's defence did not. No map verification.

- Sheridan's report and March 31 dispatch (selected; cited under VA088 and VA096) are not used here under the three-family ceiling, nor is Lee's April 1 letter relaying Pickett's report (selected; cited under VA089 only for its April 1 prisoners from the Twenty-fourth Corps). Pickett's own report was not inspected. Crook's, Merritt's, Custer's and Davies's reports (Nos. 200, 203, 208, 209) and the Warren Court of Inquiry record remain deferred.
- NPS/CWSAC (the live NPS page and the frozen Arnold rows) is one family. Humphreys' The Virginia Campaign of ’64 and ’65 (1883) is an interested history by the commander of the Second Corps in this campaign, in the same author family as the registered From Gettysburg to the Rapidan; where it narrates his own corps it is a participant's account. It relies on the reports of Sheridan, Warren, Wright, Gibbon, Ewell and Fitzhugh Lee, on Confederate testimony before the Warren Court of Inquiry and on the returns, so it is not independent of those families. Lee's, Sheridan's, Bushrod Johnson's, Miles's, Gibbon's, Ewell's and Fitzhugh Lee's papers, printed in Official Records Series I, Volume XLVI, Part 1, are separate families of interested commanders' accounts; the volume is a shared container, not an additional witness. Report dates are not event times or proof of contemporary knowledge.
- No automatic commander attribution, causal campaign score, morale/readiness number or battle/campaign double counting.
