Fisher's Hill VA120
1864-09-21 to 1864-09-22 · VA · Sheridan's Valley Campaign [August-October 1864] · frozen result: Union · NPS summary (as listed)
Early's army, bloodied by its defeat at Opequon (Third Winchester) on September 19, took up a strong defensive position at Fisher's Hill, south of Strasburg. On September 21, the Union army advanced, driving back the skirmishers and capturing important high ground. On the 22nd, Crook's Corps moved along North Mountain to outflank Early and attacked about 4 pm. The Confederate cavalry offered little resistance, and the startled infantry were unable to face the attacking force. The Confederate defense collapsed from west to east as Sheridan's other corps join in the assault. Early retreated to Rockfish Gap near Waynesboro, opening the Valley to a Union "scorched earth" invasion. Mills and barns from Staunton to Strasburg were burned in what became known as the "Burning" or "Red October."
Command responsibility (ledger v2)
US: Philip Sheridan
Grade A under rule 2; echelon army.
Rule 2. Pond has Sheridan positioning the main infantry line that drove in the skirmishers on the 21st, the side's first combat in the interval, and the description has Sheridan's corps in the assault of the 22nd. Torbert's separate Luray Valley operation failed without reaching the field (Pond); it is not the engaged force. Nothing contradicts the listing.

supportedunresolved Pond says the Confederate signal station on Three Top overlooked both camps, so Crook's move was made in secrecy, and that Early took Ricketts's and Averell's advance for the attack and ordered a retreat after dark. Early says he had decided to fall back on the night of the 22nd before a force moved under cover of the woods on his left.

Retain the original result and engagement interval; later movements and campaign contribution are different measures. No new probabilities or individual causal credit. The later burning of the Valley is campaign context.

ea0bd40e3e63…disputedpost_outcome The frozen and live casualty fields read 1,763 total (US 528; CS 1,235). Early gives his infantry and artillery loss as 30 killed, 210 wounded and 995 missing, total 1,235, says the enemy captured no more than 400 or 500, and that twelve guns were lost; Pond says sixteen guns were captured, that Sheridan reported 1,100 prisoners, and puts Sheridan's loss at about 400 and Early's at 1,300 to 1,400, deriving 1,340, besides some cavalry killed and wounded, by ascribing to the cavalry the 105 difference between Sheridan's 1,100 prisoners and Early's 995 missing.
Original casualty returns were not inspected; preserve totals, categories, cutoffs and differences. No canonical reconciliation or casualty-based opening count; related actions must not be added without resolving population overlap. Pond's range combines Early's report with Sheridan's prisoner count; it is not an independent observation.

supportedunresolved Pond says Sheridan and his staff urged the whole line forward and quotes Sheridan that the cavalry's Luray Valley operation, held at Milford, was an entire failure; Torbert says he withdrew not knowing of the attack. Early says his attempt to remedy the flanking failed when the infantry panicked. The frozen commanders are Lieutenant General Early and Major General Sheridan; the live page gives Early as Major General.
Command roles from a history and an interested report; neither listed commander receives automatic sole credit, and the live rank is not adopted.

No inspected return establishes matched personnel at a common opening boundary. Imported numerical estimates remain unchanged; this pass does not validate them as simultaneous opening forces.
disputedunresolved The frozen force field reads 38,944 total (US 29,444; CS 9,500); the live field reads 48450 (US 38950; CS 9500). Early says his line at Fisher's Hill was very thin, and on September 25 put the enemy at three or four to one. Pond says Early occupied the position when he no longer had men enough to cover it, with a force too broken and dispirited to hold it.
The frozen and live Union figures differ by 9,506 and no source basis is given; Early's ratio is an interested estimate. None is adopted as a matched opening strength.

supportedunresolved Pond says the Valley narrows here to four miles between the Massanutten and North Mountain, that Fisher's Hill is a precipitous bluff over Tumbling Run, and that the ground before it was densely wooded and broken by ledges and ravines. Early says the position could be flanked, like every position in the Valley.
Ground described by a history and an interested report. Pond says Early's line was substantially the one he had held in August and that he began erecting additional works on arriving; the claim stays unresolved. No map verification.
