objectives
supportedunresolved Humphreys says Grant sent Sheridan's cavalry and the Fifth Corps west near the Appomattox to feel Lee's army constantly; Fitzhugh Lee says he kept the North Carolina brigade in position to prevent an attack on the rest of his command as it resumed the march.
Stated aims from a history and an interested report.

supportedpost_outcome The frozen result reads 'Inconclusive' and the live 'Indecisive'. Humphreys says Barringer's brigade suffered severely and its commander and many others were captured; Fitzhugh Lee says the concentration against it was impossible to resist.
Retain the original result and engagement interval; later movements and campaign contribution are different measures. No new probabilities or individual causal credit. The rear guard's loss and the retreat's continuation are both reported; the result category is not revised.

Original casualty returns were not inspected; preserve totals, categories, cutoffs and differences. No canonical reconciliation or casualty-based opening count; related actions must not be added without resolving population overlap. The live Confederate zero conflicts with the reported captures and is not measured absence.

supportedunresolved Fitzhugh Lee says he himself held the brigade in position and that Barringer was captured; Humphreys and NPS name Welles's (Wells's) brigade of Custer's division as the attackers. The frozen commanders are Fitzhugh Lee (CS) and Custer (US), as on the live page.
Custer's own direction is not described in the inspected passages; the brigade commander is named by Humphreys and NPS. No listed commander receives automatic sole credit.

supportedunresolved The frozen force field reads 'Brigades' and the live field zero. Humphreys says the leading brigade of Custer's division, under Colonel Welles, overtook the rear of Fitz Lee's cavalry, Barringer's brigade; Fitzhugh Lee says the North Carolina brigade of W. H. F. Lee's division, held back as rear guard, was overwhelmed by the enemy's arriving forces.
Formation lists only; no headcount for either side. None is adopted as a matched opening strength; live zeros are not measured absence.

- Custer's, Wells's and Merritt's reports (Nos. 203, 200), W. H. F. Lee's and Barringer's accounts, Sheridan's report (selected; cited under VA088) and the returns remain deferred.
- NPS/CWSAC (the live NPS page and the frozen Arnold rows) is one family. Humphreys' The Virginia Campaign of ’64 and ’65 (1883) is an interested history by the commander of the Second Corps in this campaign, in the same author family as the registered From Gettysburg to the Rapidan; where it narrates his own corps it is a participant's account. It relies on the reports of Sheridan, Warren, Wright, Gibbon, Ewell and Fitzhugh Lee, on Confederate testimony before the Warren Court of Inquiry and on the returns, so it is not independent of those families. Lee's, Sheridan's, Bushrod Johnson's, Miles's, Gibbon's, Ewell's and Fitzhugh Lee's papers, printed in Official Records Series I, Volume XLVI, Part 1, are separate families of interested commanders' accounts; the volume is a shared container, not an additional witness. Report dates are not event times or proof of contemporary knowledge.
