Pickett's Mill GA012

1864-05-27 to 1864-05-27 · GA · Atlanta Campaign [May-September 1864] · frozen result: Confederate · NPS summary (as listed)

CWSAC description
After the Union defeat at New Hope Church, Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman ordered Maj. Gen. O.O. Howard to attack Gen. Joseph E. Johnston' s seemingly exposed right flank. The Confederates were ready for the attack, which did not unfold as planned because supporting troops never appeared. The Rebels repulsed the attack causing high casualties.

Command responsibility (ledger v2)

US: Oliver O. Howard

Grade A under rule 2; echelon corps_or_wing. superior_directing

Rule 2, single listing. The description has Sherman ordering Howard to attack, and Cox has Howard deciding to attack after his and Wood's reconnaissance, with Wood's division leading and Johnson's division and McLean's brigade (another army) supporting under Howard's command. Sherman directed Thomas to withdraw Wood's division for the movement (superior_directing: Sherman). Cox blames McLean's miscarried movement and Johnson's handling; no passage names another officer as commanding the side's engaged forces.

Confederate: Patrick R. Cleburne

Grade A under rule 2; echelon division. superior_directing

Rule 2, single listing. Cleburne reports the operations of his division on the 27th, and Cox has Cleburne taking position to meet Wood's attack. Kelly's (Wheeler's) dismounted cavalry also fought at the mill; no passage places them under Cleburne or names another officer as commanding the side's engaged forces. Cleburne's report is addressed to Hood's corps, Cleburne says Quarles's brigade was evidently sent up by Hood, and Cox says other troops of Hood's were moved around Cleburne (superior_directing: Hood). Cox notes that Johnston's Narrative has Polk's, not Hood's, troops supporting Cleburne, and prefers Hood's account.

Nested records

ContainingContainedOutcomeReason
Dallas GA011Pickett's Mill GA012nestedThe Dallas record's frozen force fields name the whole Military Division of the Mississippi and Army of Tennessee, which include Howard's IV Corps and Cleburne's division, and its description has Sherman's army testing the Confederate line throughout May 26 to June 1; Cox narrates New Hope Church, Pickett's Mill and Dallas as one chapter. The description's named battle is only the May 28 attack on Logan's corps, so a narrower reading of the record's fighting would make the pair unresolved.

information

supportedunresolved Cox says Howard and Wood's reconnaissance seemed to show they overlapped the Confederate line and that prisoners' statements suggested only cavalry held the flank. Cleburne says Govan's morning reconnaissance reported the enemy moving to their own left. NPS calls the flank seemingly exposed and says the Confederates were ready.

Attributed knowledge from interested accounts and a summary; no message log inspected.

objectives

supportedunresolved Cox says Wood, supported by Johnson and McLean, was to make a vigorous effort to turn the Confederate right, under orders to avoid direct assault on fortified lines. Cleburne says Lowrey's successive formation answered the Union attempt to extend its left and turn his right. NPS says Sherman ordered Howard to attack.

outcome

supportedpost_outcome The frozen and live results read Confederate victory. Cox says Wood was forced to retire and halted on a ridge in the rear, but calls the ground gained valuable for the extension of the left. Cleburne says Granbury's night charge met no resistance and many Union soldiers fled or surrendered. NPS says the attack was repulsed with high casualties.

Retain the original result and engagement interval; later movements and campaign contribution are different measures. No new probabilities or individual causal credit. Cox's claim that ground was gained is a campaign-level judgment, not the tactical result.

disputedpost_outcome The frozen casualty text reads 2,100 (US 1,600; CS 500); the live field reads 2050 (US 1600; CS 450). Cleburne gives his own loss as 85 killed and 363 wounded, estimates the Union dead at not less than 500 and total killed and wounded at not less than 3,000, and reports 160 prisoners sent to army headquarters besides 72 wounded in his hospital. Cox says Howard reported a total loss of about fifteen hundred, and that Johnston claims seventy wounded and 140 prisoners.

Original casualty returns were not inspected; preserve totals, categories, cutoffs and differences. No canonical reconciliation or casualty-based opening count; related actions must not be added without resolving population overlap. Cleburne's killed and wounded sum to 448 (a computation here), close to the live CS 450; his prisoner figures and Johnston's as quoted by Cox differ. The Union figures are estimates or an approximate total.

responsibility

supportedunresolved Cox says McLean's diversion miscarried through some mistake and that the attack would probably have succeeded had Johnson pushed Scribner's brigade on after noticing he was flanked only by cavalry. Cleburne credits Granbury's Texans and Lowrey. NPS says supporting troops never appeared. The frozen commanders are Major General Patrick R. Cleburne and Major General Oliver O. Howard; the live page gives the same ranks.

Attributed judgments from interested accounts and a summary; Johnson, McLean, Granbury and Lowrey are not listed commanders; the frozen commanders do not receive automatic sole credit.

strength

unknownunresolved

No inspected return establishes matched personnel at a common opening boundary. The frozen side-specific numerical strength bounds are blank (missing_numeric_strength). No figure in this pass is adopted as a simultaneous opening force.

supportedunresolved The frozen force fields name the IV Corps against Cleburne's Division and Kelly's Brigade without counts; the live field reads zero. Cleburne says he carried 4,683 muskets into the engagement, and says a dismounted cavalry force had passed behind Granbury as the Union advance began; Quarles's brigade, sent up by Hood, later formed a second line. Cox says Wood's division attacked in a column six lines deep, with Johnson's division (Fourteenth Corps) in echelon and McLean's brigade (Army of the Ohio) as support, and that Wheeler's dismounted cavalry struck Johnson's flank.

Cleburne's musket count is a partial one-side figure (muskets, not all personnel) for his division; the Union attacking force was not only the IV Corps. No matched count is inspected and none is adopted. The live zero is not measured absence.

terrain

supportedunresolved Cleburne says his position was covered with trees and undergrowth, that a deep ravine ran in front of Granbury, and that entrenchments were thrown up on the 26th and 27th. Cox says the ground was a dense wood broken into ravines where nothing could be seen, and that what Howard and Wood took for the end of the Confederate line was an angle making a sharply refused flank.

Ground described by interested accounts; no map verification. The Confederate works were built during the operation and are not tagged inherited. Johnston's report (cited in GA010 wooded-ridges-and-works; not a GA012 family) says the troops were not entrenched in the May 25 and May 27 actions; Cleburne's statement of entrenchments thrown up on the 26th-27th conflicts with it and is unresolved. How far those works covered the ground of the afternoon fight is not settled in the inspected passages.
